Two Types of Classes

Beginner: Hand Sewing

  • Introduce you to basic hand-sewing tools, materials, and simple stitches.

    Topics Covered:

    • Introduction to sewing tools: needles, thread, scissors, thimble, fabric

    • Threading a needle, tying knots

    • Basic hand stitches:

      • Running stitch

      • Backstitch

      • Whipstitch

    Activity:

    • Practice each stitch on scrap fabric

    • Make a small pouch to practice stitches

  • I’ll teach you how to select fabrics and perform basic repairs.

    Topics Covered:

    • Different types of fabric (cotton, linen, polyester etc.) and their uses

    • How to sew on a button

    • Fixing small holes or tears with hand stitches

    Activity:

    • Sew on buttons onto a piece of fabric

    • Repair a small hole using the whipstitch or running stitch

  • We’ll work on basic hemming and edge-finishing techniques.

    Topics Covered:

    • Hand-sewing hems:

      • Running hem

      • Blind hem

    • Finishing edges:

      • Overcasting stitch

    Activity:

    • Hem a small piece of fabric (like a napkin or handkerchief)

    • Practice overcasting stitch on fabric edges

  • This week, we’ll sew a complete small project.

    Topics Covered:

    • How to stitch pieces of fabric together

    • Basic hand-sewing techniques for assembling a project (e.g., sewing a seam)

    • Creating an opening for a button or zipper

    Activity:

    • Begin stitching together a simple pillow or small bag using the techniques learned

    • Practice sewing seams, attaching handles (if applicable)

Beginner: Sewing Machine

  • Get familiar with the sewing machine and learn basic functions.

    Topics Covered:

    • Overview of the sewing machine parts: needle, presser foot, bobbin, feed dogs, and stitch selector

    • How to thread the machine, including the needle and bobbin

    • Adjusting stitch length and width

    • Setting up and threading the machine correctly

    Activity:

    • Practice threading the machine

    • Learn how to sew straight lines on scrap fabric

    • Make a simple fabric strip or small coaster to practice machine control

  • We’ll use different fabrics and practice basic machine stitches.

    Topics Covered:

    • How to choose fabric for sewing machine projects

    • Basic stitches: Straight stitch, zig-zag stitch, and reverse stitch

    • Sewing seams with a straight stitch

    • The importance of seam allowances

    Activity:

    • Practice sewing straight lines on different fabric types (cotton, denim, etc.)

    • Experiment with zig-zag stitch and reverse stitch for reinforcement

    • Make a small fabric pouch or coaster with a straight stitch

  • This week, you’ll how to sew basic seams and create hems.

    Topics Covered:

    • Types of seams: plain seam, French seam, and double-stitched seam

    • How to create a hem: single fold and double fold hems

    • How to finish seams using a zig-zag stitch or overlock stitch (if available)

    Activity:

    • Sew a straight seam and finish with a zig-zag stitch

    • Practice making a hem on fabric (e.g., a small napkin or cloth)

    • Work on a simple project such as a fabric bookmark or small piece with hemmed edges

  • You’ll assemble fabric pieces into a project!

    Topics Covered:

    • How to cut fabric pieces accurately using a pattern (pre-cut or self-made)

    • Pinning fabric and sewing seams together

    • Creating a simple project (like a tote bag or pillow)

    • Attaching handles (for tote) or finishing edges

    Activity:

    • Begin assembling a small tote bag or pillow
